What would you describe as your area of expertise?
While I feel I do bring solid expertise in utilising improvement methodologies to any project, I like to think that I am able to cut through a lot of complexity and simplify problems and solutions in way that helps people deliver improved outcomes.
Which projects are you most proud of (and why)?
Delivering a new model for managing operating room capacity at one of our large DHBs is one project that I’m particularly proud of as it was the result of a lot of collaboration and taking a system wide approach to achieve the operational benefits.
I also enjoyed delivering a transportation project that the DHB had previously been tentative about addressing. While highly contentious, it did deliver an improved experience for patients and families but also generated many great stories from staff who had adapted their own behaviour for the benefit of patients and families which demonstrated the fundamental caring nature of most healthcare workers.
How would you describe working for Francis Health?
While it hasn’t been long, it is great to be able to work across a number of different healthcare organisations and be able to share experiences and successes between them. It’s also a change for me working in a small organisation that feels nimble but has a great depth of knowledge and experience.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently engaged in work with Southern DHB to support improvement of operating room improvements. Also supporting work at Waitemata DHB to improve the flow of patients through ADU.
What is your Big Hairy Audacious Goal?
To cycle all the great new NZ cycle trails on my mountain bike. The recent development of so many great trails are fantastic, and provide access to some amazing parts of New Zealand that would have otherwise be inaccessible. It’s a great way to see the country and keep a healthy mind and body.
